The first prototype flew in February 1936. Finland was the first customer for this plane. Because of its high diving speed, it could break out from combat when necessary. Flown by both Holland and Denmark against the Germans and later flown by Finland against the Russians. Out performed and out numbered by Luftwaffe aircraft the D.XXI acquitted it self well, but it was against the Russians that the D.XXI came into its own, taking a tremendous toll of Russian aircraft.
